BARC Jeep Wins Instructables Contest

Neal’s BARC Jeep won a second prize in the recent Instructables Microcontroller Contest. Neal is a HackRVA member and built much of his project at the space.

He had some helping hands such as Fred troubleshooting software problems and others helping with fab. Dustin shot the video and I got to help write up the project for Instructables. Projects have a way of coming together at the space with multiple brains and hands.

The modded power wheels jeep is driven remotely from an xbox controller. Check out the complete build on Instructable here.

Way to go on your win Neal! Enjoy that new tablet!

Maker Guild

MKLS01-2T

One of our members, Catherine, is having Maker Guild meetings at the space.  Today we taught 8 kids (and some parents) how to solder. We made these cool Make badges with LED eyes. Kids were happy and proud! You can’t see it in the picture, but the eyes cycle through a rainbow of colors, but not in sync. We are happy to support the group. They will be the next generation of makers and hackers.

Spooklet Zine Assembly Hangout

A fun evening had by all at HackRVA assembling the 3rd edition of The Spooklet Zine, a Halloween-themed literary arts publication, which will be featured at the RVA ZineFest in October. In addition to cutting and assembling the zines, we also made special edition copies of The Spooklet with paper circuits and light-up covers. See The Spooklet Facebook page for more details about this spooktacular read.

Festival of Community Makers

HackRVA participated in the “Festival of Community Makers” in Fredericksburg, VA.  We presented our X-Box controller controlled power wheels which was a big hit with kids and adults alike. Also, Mark Fraunfelder gave a talk on maker communities and signed autographs of his new book “Made By Hand“. It was a great day of learning about other makers and sharing projects.

IT Resume Workshop

from jduncan -

The best recruiters out there say you should update your resume regularly, whether you’re looking for a new position or not. It’s a great way to keep track of your accomplishments.

On Tuesday, February 12, at 7pm we will be having Jennifer Henderson, Recruiting Director for the Richmond Consultant Shop Ironworks, to give a talk and even some hands-on assistance with Richmond IT Professionals who aren’t exactly sure what their resume should look like these days.

Refreshments will be provided. Bring a current copy of your resume, business cards if you have them, and something to take notes with.

See you then!

Database Design Class is Tomorrow!

from clintwn -
Database Design class is tomorrow.
I’ll provide copies of MySQL Workbench and a primary MySQL server deployed within HackRVAs network that we can run some simple queries off of.
I’ll also lead everyone through the process of setting up a server in two Linux distributions, Fedora and Ubuntu.
Then I’ll cover table creation, the basics of storage engines, how best to debug a server instance (with and without access to the linux instance it’s running on) and i’ll show everyone how to connect some common applications to it, such as syslog-ng and apache ActiveMQ.
Finally, if we have time, I’ll explain some programming principles and tools centered around the best ways to work with databases, such as Object Relational Mappers in Python.

Intro to Soldering Class

from Babs -

The Introduction to Soldering Class was a success! There were a lot of new faces in hack.rva for the class and we had a total of 20 participants.  Everyone got to take home their soldering iron and their finished project, which was a flashing siren.  Thank you to Luke for teaching the class and thank you to everyone who signed up.
